The M706 Commando Armored Car was an American wheeled reconnaissance and command vehicle, the first prototypes of which were built in the early 1960s. The length of the vehicle was 5.69 meters with a width of 2.26 meters. The drive was provided by a single engine 8 cylinder with 202 hp. The maximum speed on the road was 88 km / h. The armament of the car was mostly machine guns with a caliber of 7.62 or 12.7 mm.
The M706 truck was developed as a private initiative of the armaments company Cadillac Cage (now: Textron Systems), which intended to offer its product on export markets - especially in Third World countries. This in turn meant that the new vehicle was characterized by a relatively simple structure, ease of use and low operating costs. The car also had amphibious abilities. However, in connection with the Vietnam War, the M706 vehicle (but also many other vehicles from the Cadillac Cage Armored Car family) became interested in the American armed forces, which acquired these vehicles and sent them to their own forces in Vietnam or handed them over to the troops of South Vietnam. During this military conflict, the M706 was used as a recon vehicle, but was also used to cover road convoys. Currently, the M1117 vehicle is a very far-reaching development of the M706.
